Auschwitz II

Auschwitz II (Birkenau) was primarily built for execution, but also housed 90,000 slave labourers for nearby farms and factories. Also, as a “Concentration Camp” it collected prisoners to be distributed to factories elsewhere.
It was built as a production line for mass murder, consisting of 6 gas chambers all of which were destroyed before liberation. It is estimated that over 1.1 million people were exterminated here.
The trains containing prisoners would stop here to unload their cargo.
