Auschwitz I

Auschwitz was built by the Nazis in 1940, and is a symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the mass murder of European Jews by the Nazis during World War II.
In addition to the many buildings that housed the inmates, the gas chambers and furnaces are also well preserved. Many of the buildings now house the museum. Very soon it became too small to cope with demand, so Aushwitz II (Birkenau) was built.
Both of these sites are well worth a visit, as no amount of documentaries can do justice to the horrors perpetrated here.
